Activity Description
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, affecting 1 out of every 6 men in the United States. Each year, it is diagnosed in 234,460 men and approximately 27,000 die as a result. Patients with this disease may be treated by urologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, or a combination of these specialists, depending on their tumor stage, rate of progression, and life expectancy. Although 91% of all prostate cancer cases are detected at an early (localized) stage, management has not yet been perfected and metastasis is a common occurrence. Fortunately, continued progress has been made in the treatment of prostate cancer over the past 5 years, and improvements in both strategies and available therapeutic agents have increased survival rates for patients with prostate cancer.
On March 27, 2010, ArcMesa Educators hosted its Third Annual Interdisciplinary Prostate Cancer Congress (IPCC) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. This full-day continuing medical education (CME) activity entitled, Translating Advances into Clinical Practice was jointly sponsored by the University of Cincinnati and ArcMesa Educators and is a continuing effort dedicated to addressing the differences that currently exist between urologists’, medical oncologists’ and radiation oncologists’ approaches to treating prostate cancer.
This CME program was co-chaired by Dr. Leonard Gomella from Thomas Jefferson University and Dr. Daniel Petrylak from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In addition, Dr. Roy Berger, Dr. E. David Crawford, Dr. Robert Dreicer and Dr. Howard Sandler rounded out the faculty panel for this symposium. These world-renowned thought leaders have been brought together to foster consensus about the best management of prostate cancer from the vantage point of interdisciplinary care teams. Among several topics of vital interest to these groups of clinicians, the IPCC addressed hormonal therapies, imaging and staging, surgical advances, radiation therapies and emerging multi-modal therapies. The IPCC concluded with a set of interactive case-based presentations designed to highlight multidisciplinary approaches for the management of prostate cancer with the overall goal of improving patient outcomes.
