Lawrence Blonde, MD, FACP, FACE, is director of the Ochsner Diabetes Clinical Research Unit in the Section on Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and Associate Residency Program Director in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Blonde’s clinical and research activities have focused on patients with diabetes mellitus and investigations of new therapies and healthcare delivery systems for them. He has also published and presented information about the use of computers to enhance medical education and patient care.

He is a member of the Executive Committee, Chair of the Operations Committee and Chair-elect of the Steering Committee of the National Diabetes Education Program, representing the American College of Physicians (ACP) and is chair of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Doing Better Committee.

Dr. Blonde is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Council for the Advancement of Diabetes Research and Education (CADRE) and is a member of the National Quality Forum Adult Diabetes Care Consensus Maintenance Committee. Dr. Blonde is a former member of the board of directors of the American Diabetes Association and is a current member and former chair of the ADA Professional Practice Committee, which develops practice guidelines for the care of people with diabetes.

James R. Gavin III, M.D., Ph.D., graduated from Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., in 1966 with a degree in chemistry. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Emory University in 1970 and his M.D. degree from Duke University School of Medicine in 1975.

Dr. Gavin is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Senior Health Advisor on Health Affairs, Emory University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA. He was president of the Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA from 2002-2004.  He served as senior scientific officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) from 1991-2002 and director of the HHMI-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program from 2000-2002.

Before joining the senior staff of HHMI, he was on faculty at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center as a professor and as chief of the Diabetes Section, acting chief of the Section on Endocrinology, Metabolism and Hypertension, and William K. Warren Professor for Diabetes Studies. He previously served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.  He was a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1971-73 and continues to serve as a reserve officer in the USPHS.

Dr. Gavin belongs to a number of organizations, including the Council of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Diabetes Association, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Association of Physicians, the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the Association of Black Cardiologists, Omicron Delta Kappa Honorary Society and the Sigma Pi Phi Leadership Fraternity. He is a past president of the American Diabetes Association and was voted Clinician of the Year by ADA in Diabetes in 1991.  He has served on many advisory boards and on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology and the American Journal of Medical Sciences. He is on the board of trustees for Duke University, Emory University, MicroIslet, Inc., Anastasia Marie Labs, Inc., and is a member of the Board of Baxter Pharmaceutical Corporation. He is a trustee emeritus with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He is also national program director of  the Harold Amos Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.  Dr. Gavin is chairman of the National Diabetes Education Program and a past member of the Advisory Council to the NIDDK. He is chairman of the Data Safety Monitoring Board for the VA Cooperative Diabetes Study.

He has published more than 190 articles and abstracts in such publications as Science, Journal of Applied Physiology, Diabetes, and the American Journal of Physiology.  He is author of two books “Healing our Village: A Self-Care guide for diabetes control” (with L. Coleman), and “Dr. Gavin’s Health Guide for African Americans” (with S. Landrum).  Dr. Gavin also hosts the Public Broadcast PowerPoint Health Radio Show for WCLK Radio, 91.9 FM, Atlanta.

Among the many honors Dr. Gavin has received are the Daniel Hale Williams Award, the E.E. Just Award, the Herbert Nickens Award, the Daniel Savage Memorial Award, the Emory University Medal for Distinguished Achievement, the Banting Medal for Distinguished Service from the American Diabetes Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Duke University School of Medicine, and the Internist of the Year from the National Medical Association.

Dr. Gavin and his wife, Annie, have been married for 34 years and they have three adult sons.

Diep Koly is a physician and biomedical communications specialist with 4 years of experience in medical writing, content editing, and consulting. After receiving her MD degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Medical School, Dr. Koly completed 17 months of internal medicine residency training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Following her residency, she established an independent business as a freelance medical writer. She has worked on numerous forms of media publications, including sales training programs, journal articles, abstracts, pharmaceutical reports, medical textbooks, symposia, and web applications. Her therapeutic areas of expertise include cardiology, gastroenterology, oncology, rheumatology, obstetrics and gynecology, and ophthalmology.

After completing her medical training, Dr. Koly also served as the Medical Editor for Intelihealth, a subsidiary of Aetna US Healthcare. In this role, she developed content for Aetna’s award winning consumer health website, Intelihealth.com, and managed and expanded Intelihealth’s professional website to include clinical and practice management information, tools, and resources for physicians. She was also responsible for researching and developing strategies for Aetna’s e-health initiatives and served as a liaison to Aetna’s board of medical directors and quality assurance group to help ensure coordination of efforts.

Dr. Koly also recently served as the Medical Director for Apothecom Associates, a medical education agency. In this role, she was responsible for the development of client medical communications strategies and worked closely with pharmaceutical clients, writers, authors, and content contributors to oversee the implementation of tactical plans. Her medical background and experience in the pharmaceutical, managed care, and medical publishing industry brought broad perspective to her role as Medical Director and continues to provide perspective and expertise to her current role as the medical writer for Scinexa.
