John M. Pellock, MD

John M. Pellock, MD, is chairman of the division of child neurology and vice chairman of the department of neurology at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where he is also director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Institute and professor of neurology, pediatrics, and pharmacy and pharmaceutics. He received his MD from St. Louis University, trained in pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia, and completed a fellowship in child neurology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. During that fellowship he began working with Dr. C.E. Pippinger to establish pharmacokinetic patterns of antiepileptic drugs in children and adults. His military service at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, allowed an interaction with Dr. J. Kiffin Penry, which continued over the years.

Dr. Pellock is a diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with Special Qualification in Child Neurology. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Neurological Association, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Child Neurology Society, and the American Epilepsy Society. He has served as an officer of the CNS, and of the Child Neurology and Epilepsy sections of the AAN, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Epilepsy Society. Dr. Pellock is senior editor of Pediatric Epilepsy, Diagnosis and Therapy, 2nd Edition, and Neurologic Emergencies in Infancy and Childhood. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Child Neurology, Pediatric Neurology, the Journal of Pediatric Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and the Journal of Epileptic Disorders, and serves as reviewer of a number of journals including Epilepsia, Neurology, Pediatrics, the New England Journal of Medicine, Epilepsy Research, Annals of Neurology, Drug Safety and the Journal of Pediatrics. He has published extensively and lectured widely on pediatric epilepsy and has conducted clinical research in antiepileptic drug development, therapy, adverse events, and clinical epilepsy. He has served on multiple NIH study sections, site visit teams, and oversight committees (NIH and VA).

James W. Wheless, MD, is professor and chief of pediatric neurology and the Le Bonheur Chair in pediatric neurology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. He is also Clinical Director and Chief of Pediatric Neurology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Director of the Pediatric Neuroscience Institute and the Le Bonheur Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. He is Board Certified in Pediatrics, Child Neurology, and Clinical Neurophysiology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Wheless graduated from the University of Oklahoma, where he also earned his MD and did his residency and internship in pediatrics. He was a child neurology fellow at Children's Memorial Hospital at Northwestern University and an EEG/epilepsy fellow at the Medical College of Georgia.

Dr. Wheless' primary clinical interests include child convulsive disorders and general pediatric neurology. His research is focused on pediatric antiepileptic drug development, magnetoencephalography, the ketogenic diet, and epilepsy surgery. Dr. Wheless is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed articles on these subjects, and he is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Child Neurology.

Wheless has received numerous honors, including "Who's Who in Science and Engineering," "Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare," "Who's Who in the World," and "Best Doctors in America."

Miami Children’s Hospital


Patricia Dean, ARNP, MSN is Clinical Coordinator of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center at Miami Children's Hospital in Miami, Florida. Patricia Dean received her BS in Nursing from Downstate Medical Center and her Masters of Nursing at the University of Miami. Ms. Dean is nationally recognized for her work with children with epilepsy and has been involved with the consumer side of epilepsy on local, state, and national leves. She is on the Board of Directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of America and President of the Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida. She is the recipient of the Medical Services Award from the Epilepsy Foundation of South Florida and the Volunteer of the Year from the national organization. She served on the Governor’s Task Force on Epilepsy. Dean is a highly sought-after lecturer and has published numerous articles. Her research interests are on the antecedents of developmental pathology in intractable epilepsy and self-management skills in epilepsy.

Terry Ann Glauser MD MPH is a freelance medical consultant and writer with extensive experience in creating and reviewing both CME accredited and nonaccredited medical education materials.  Dr. Glauser has written scripts for educational videos, CD-ROMs, and websites, and has been the managing editor of three educational websites.  She also has print experience, having authored articles for peer-reviewed medical journals, monographs, and slide kits. She is currently a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Medical Quality and an independent medical reviewer for numerous CME programs.

Dr. Glauser attended Jefferson Medical College, receiving her medical degree in 1981. She completed a residency in Emergency Medicine and practiced until 1993, when she matriculated at Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.  She began her medical writing career shortly after receiving her master’s degree in Public Health in 1995.
