John P. Bilezikian, MD, FACP, MACE, is Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, and is also Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Director of the Metabolic Bone Diseases Program at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, both in New York, New York. Dr Bilezikian earned his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed an internship, residency, and chief residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He also received training in metabolic bone diseases and in endocrinology at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, where he served as a Clinical Associate. He is board certified in internal medicine and in endocrinology and metabolism.
Dr. Bilezekian’s major research interests are related to the clinical investigation of metabolic bone diseases, particularly osteoporosis and primary hyperthyroidism, and he is a major national and international spokesperson on these topics. He is the author or coauthor of more than 490 articles and book chapters and more than 460 abstracts, and has also edited several books. He currently serves as an editor or on the editorial board of Osteoporosis International, the Journal of Women’s Health, Women’s Health in Primary Care, and Current Osteoporosis Reports.
A past president of both the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, Dr Bilezekian is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Master of the American College of Endocrinology. He is also a member of the Endocrine Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Association for Clinical Endocrinology, and the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. In 2006, Dr Bilezekian received the first annual Global Leadership Award of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry.

E. Michael Lewiecki, MD, FACP, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and Director of the New Mexico Clinical Research and Osteoporosis Center in Albuquerque. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago and completed his internship and residency at the University of New Mexico Affiliated Hospitals, Albuquerque. He is board certified in internal medicine.
Dr Lewiecki’s special interests include osteoporosis and bone densitometry, and he is the author or coauthor of numerous publications in these areas, including 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 50 abstracts, and several books and chapters. He is also a frequently invited speaker at scientific meetings, with presentations that focus on the evaluation and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr Lewiecki has been involved in more than 50 clinical trials on osteoporosis, in most cases as Principal Investigator. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Bone Densitometry and also serves in an advisory or reviewing capacity for several other journals, including Osteoporosis International and Bone.
A past president of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry, Dr Lewiecki received the organization’s Paul D. Miller Service Award in 2006. He is the founder and current president of the Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Dr Lewiecki is also a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the International Bone and Mineral Society, the National Osteoporosis Foundation, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. |

Paul D. Miller, MD, FACP, is Distinguished Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and Medical Director of the Colorado Center for Bone Research in Lakewood, Colorado. Dr Miller received his medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He served his internship, residency, and chief residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, New York, and subsequently completed clinical and research fellowships in renal diseases at the University of Colorado Medical Center, Denver. He is board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology.
Dr Miller’s research focus has been the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and he is the Principal Investigator in a number of ongoing clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of current and potential therapies, including alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate, zoledronic acid, and parathyroid hormone. He is the author or coauthor of more than 180 publications, including original articles, chapters, and books. Dr Miller is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry and is on the editorial boards of Osteoporosis International, Calcified Tissue Research, the Journal of Women’s Health, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s Osteoporosis: Clinical Updates Newsletter.
A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr Miller is a member of numerous professional organizations. He is the founding president of the International Society for Clinical Densitometry and is the founder and current president of the Metabolic Bone Disease Society of Colorado. He is on the Board of Directors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation and is also a member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research and the International Bone and Mineral Society. In addition to his distinguished professorship, Dr Miller has received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and in 2005, he was awarded the Career Achievement Award by the Department of Medicine, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. |
